Determining just how easily aromatics escape or are conserved by packaging - from food through to cosmetics and household products - has moved on from the black art of a few years ago into a science. This is due to technological advances in vapour permeability detection equipment. These have been combined into the advanced Versaperm MS Vapour Permeability System.
The system works on all packaging materials, including coatings, laminates, films, card and plastics as well as on complete and finished packages or containers. From modified atmosphere packaging through to pharmaceutical, cosmetic and traditional packaging, Versaperm’s new multi-chamber Mass Spectrometry system allows users to detect even volatile top-note aromatic compounds with accuracies in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to PPB ranges.
And it allows you to determine the individual permeabilities of the packaging against any or all individual aromatics, or other vapours such as water, oxygen CO2 etc., with a single measurement.
The equipment can either be used on the packaging materials themselves, or on complete finished and packaged products. This can be vital as manufacturing processes such as heating, thermoforming, folding, stretching etc. can increase or decrease a package’s vapour permeability by a factor of 400%.
Where desired the equipment can control temperature, pressure and other factors.
The multi-chamber system allows measurements to be produced on multiple samples at the same time and for different aromatics. Different designs and clamping systems cater for varying sample and product types.
As well as manufacturing the instruments, Versaperm offers a permeability testing service for companies that only need to test packaging or materials on an irregular basis.
